Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease is currently understood as a clinical-biological entity whose characterization should take into account the use of biomarkers. Until recently, the use of biomarkers required a lumbar puncture or PET scan. The emergence of blood-based biomarkers has made the biological characterization of the disease more accessible and is considered one of the main advances in Alzheimer’s disease. Their use, however, must be careful, as their interpretation can be difficult—especially for the general population—and their value varies substantially depending on the population in which they are used. In this narrative review, we present the state of the art of blood biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease, specifically the investigational data and their clinical applicability.
